I aplogize for the lack of pics thus far. Hopefully I will get them eventually, but for now, I hope this will help a little.

Required tools:
  • 9/32 socket
  • extension
  • ratchet
  • phillips screwdriver
  • piece of loose wire to use to splice
  • scotch tape
  • electrical tape
  • torque head screwdriver...not sure of size...pretty small though
Things that are helpful, but not necessary:
  • soldering iron
  • solder
  • screwdriver handle socket holder thingy
  • ring end crimp thingy...the thing you crimp onto end of wire to slide it over a bolt
  • With phillips screwdriver remove two screws from the panel under the steering column. Then w/ 9/32" socket(referred to as 'socket' from here on out as 9/32" is the only size required) remove other two screws from this panel. Pull panel out and unclip the electrical connector off the rear defrost switch. Put it aside.
  • Now open glove box door and locate three hex head screws on radio surround panel. Remove these three with socket. Locate two on left side of this panel and remove them. Now pull off and set aside.
  • Now locate the two hex head screws on the bottom of the guage surround panel. There is one on either side of the steering column. Remove those. Remove fuse panel cover on left side of dash. Locate one hex head screw on corner of guage surround panel and remove.
  • Now this is the most difficult thing. There are two screws for the guage surround panel underneath the dash top panel. They are hard to get to. Okay, insert screwdriver underneath dash top panel at the far left of it and run along gap toward center of car. Gently pull up and try to get the dash top panel to pop up. It is attached by velcro. It is very brittle, so be VERY careful while doing this. The first time you pop it off it will be the hardest, so be patient and easy on it. Once you get it to pop, run screwdriver along the gap and pop off the other velcro spots as far over as the middle of the passenger side air bag. Now I have very small hands, so I didn't have to go any further than this. If you have ape hands or aren't real good with them, you may need to try and get the panel off a little more. As I did it, I had it up about 3"... so not very much. Anyways, there are two hex head screws under there, roughly the same spots as the lower two... about a 1/3 of the way in from each side. So use the socket and get those babies off any way you can! After they are loose you'll probably have to use the socket in your fingers... its a lot of fun! When you get these out the guage surround panel will pull out. Now you can pull all the electrical connectors for the lights apart...but it is not necessary, and IMHO too much of a PIA for me to deal with. I've done this 4 times now, and I left them connected each time. Just tilt the column down and pull it out.
  • Now there are four screws that hold the guage cluster in. There is one near each corner, so locate and remove them with the socket.
  • Pull cluster out as far as it will come and locate electrical connector on left side. Depress clip and pull out connector...kinda tight sometimes. Now manuever cluster out w/o hitting and nicking up steering wheel.
  • Now place cluster on ground carfully and remove torque head screws holding the black frame on the cluster. You don't have to remove the clear lense unless you want to clean it up underneath. Careful with the clear plastic... it scratches really easy.
  • Now take the overlay and put it on! It wasn't that hard, just take you time and be patient. I found it necessary to first slide two big needles on(speedo and tach), then the two on the left(oil press, and water temp), then slide it over the other two and the trip resetter. Get it on any way you can though. (Just a note: YOU DON'T NEED TO REMOVE ANY NEEDLES!!!! JUST SLIDE THE OVERLAY OVER THEM!!!!!)
  • Now, center it the best you can and tape the edges with scotch tape. I found it necessary to put the black piece back on and check the alignment a bunch of times before I got it right. The tape is just to hold it down until you screw the black piece back down...so you don't need much tape. Once its on there good screw down the black piece and your ready to stick it back in there!
  • Maneuver the cluster back in and reconnect the electrical connector and put the cluster back it its place. Just drop the wire from the overlay down. Put the four screw back it now.
  • Now the most involved part. Take the wiring harness and take a look at it. Think about how it works.

    More to come..........
